U.S. Senator Gary Peters visited Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch Wednesday to see work under way on a $33 million expansion project. The expansion, announced by Herbruck’s last year, is being undertaken entirely by Michigan workers and will help further expand Herbruck’s growing business.

“We appreciate Senator Peters for his interest in learning more about what we do every day, and for his commitment to partnership in growing Michigan agriculture,” said Stephen Herbruck, president of Herbruck’s. “We’re proud of the efforts underway to further expand our company, while maintaining our commitment to a strong community and the highest-quality product.”

“As a local, fourth-generation family company, it’s no surprise that Herbruck’s is committed to economic growth right here in Ionia County,” said Sen. Peters. “The company is expanding with a focus on creating good, local jobs in Mid-Michigan, and Herbruck’s is a perfect example of the economic benefits of Michigan’s growing agriculture sector.”

For decades, the Herbruck family of Michigan has supplied farm-fresh eggs to major retailers and food service outlets. Today’s business was founded by Harry and Marilyn Herbruck in Ionia County in 1958, and its roots stretch back to the late 1920s. The company’s flock has grown from 3,000 laying hens in the 1950s to 7 million today.

Herbruck’s began producing organic eggs on-site in 1998 and opened its Green Meadow Organics facility in 2008. Herbruck’s quickly became one of the largest organic egg producers in the country, with 1.2 million organic laying hens today and with plans to grow that number to 2 million by 2016.
