QAI has been directly associated with multiple scandals. They were caught certifying both factory dairy and factory egg “organic” operations that were pushing if not outright defying the letter of organic rules. For example, QAI certifies Aurora Dairy, which milks many thousands of cows in the desert and has been implicated in not appropriately pasturing their animals.

QAI has also been implicated (via FOIA documents), in the practice of allowing non-organic feed ingredients for livestock. Evidence also shows their approval of the use of genetically altered algae-based DHA oil for infant formula (for use by giant pharmaceutical companies like Parke-Davis and Abbott Laboratories). Not only was the material not preapproved by the NOSB, and added to the National List of approved substances as is normally required, but the oil was extracted from the biomass of algae with hexane, a volatile solvent produced as a byproduct of gasoline refinement. Solvent extraction is specifically banned in organic production.
