|ACCREDITED SCOPES||CROPS, HANDLING, LIVESTOCK, WILD CROPS|
This certifier did not participate in Cornucopia’s study or return their surveys. We know that many certifiers were under a lot of pressure from their peers not to participate. It is unfortunate that they decided to stand with fellow members of their trade group, the Accredited Certifiers Association, instead of with the high-integrity organic farmers around the country who are having their livelihoods put at risk by the improprieties being endorsed by some certifiers.
Certifiers in the yellow category (caution) range from for-profit businesses, in which we have no data whatsoever, to a number that we have always had confidence in, and profess on their websites that they are doing the right thing. However, they have been unwilling to those statements in writing and have it signed by a corporate officer.
We model this requirement after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act passed by Congress requiring the CEO of publicly held corporations to attest to the accuracy of filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Previously many had claimed no knowledge of improprieties, and misrepresentations in reporting, that occurred under their watch.
If you are a farmer or handler and do business with this certifier we hope you try to convince them to participate so we can give them, if appropriate, a higher rating. If not, we hope you will flex your economic muscle by shifting your patronage to a certifier that is on the record sharing your values.
