EcoCert/ICO, is a major European-based certifier, working worldwide, that purchased the former Indiana Certified Organic operation. This certifier did not participate in our study and is known to certify Superior Fresh, that claims to be the largest aquaponics facility in the world.
Freedom of Information Act disclosures also show that Ecocert ICO has had multiple serious non-compliances the organic rules and regulations. These non-compliances included their certification of a suspended operation without NOP reinstatement process being completed. They also found to have made false statements to the NOP in the past.
Their executive director, attorney Leslie Zook, previously ran Pennsylvania Certified Organic and had an ongoing dispute with their Board of Directors. She also sits on the board of the OTA and was a key proponent of a mandatory organic checkoff (tax) viewed as repugnant by the majority organic farmers and the organizations that represents them.
